Android SMS Trojans on the Rise

Google’s open policy towards apps on Android is starting to wreak havoc as there has been a recent spate of apps being released onto Android Market containing Trojan software. The malicious apps often pose themselves as free versions of premium apps, or downloaders for popular games like Angry Birds and Cut the Rope, but once installed sign the user up to premium rate SMS services.

Security companies that monitor such malicious content being added to Android have alerted Google, who have had the offending apps removed from Android Market. But just as Google removes some apps, even more are added by the same fraudsters. Even though Google can disable the accounts of people uploading malicious apps, there is nothing to stop them just setting up new accounts.

Many of the apps are primarily distributed through third party app websites and torrents. Security company Lookout have named the most recent threat as RuFraud, and say that it originated on Android Market via a horoscope app. Not many people downloaded this app, and it has since been removed. But RuFraud was then uploaded again in a dozen more apps that may have been downloaded by as many as 15,000 people.

The RuFraud Trojan appears to only affect Android phones in European countries, and so far does not appear to pose a threat to North American Android users.

The open nature of Android apps is often cited by Android fans as being one of the systems greatest benefits, which allows them much greater freedom than the ‘walled garden’ ecosystem employed by Apple on the iPhone. But with this freedom comes great risk. While the iPhone may occasionally suffer from similar problems, Apple’s vetting process for new apps helps to ensure that the impact of malicious content is minimal. It is also far easier for Apple to prevent the same tricksters operating again.

Android malware has risen by about 400% in the last few months and is starting to become a serious problem for the Google OS. Anti-virus software exists for Android, but these are often ineffective in identifying new cases.

Alongside fragmentation, malicious apps are one of the biggest problems facing Android. Microsoft has been keen to capitalize on this by offering victims of Android malware the chance to get a free Windows Phone. While Google has taken steps to minimize fragmentation with Ice Cream Sandwich, launched recently on the Galaxy Nexus, they have no plans to restrict apps or introduce a walled garden system like Apple.

While some of the recent RuFraud apps made their way into Android Market, most of them were obtained by unwitting users from unofficial websites and torrent downloads. In order to prevent such malicious apps from being installed on your phone you should always be skeptical of apps that are not obtained from Android Market.

If an app claims to be a free version of a popular premium app, check to see whether it has been produced by the same people – if not, this can be a clear giveaway that something is not right. Many of the recent RuFraud apps content clauses in their Terms of Service, granting the app permission to subscribe to premium rate SMS services. As the saying goes, “always read the smallprint”.

Christmas Phone Review Samsung Galaxy S

So, here it is! The phone Korean manufacturer Samsung are hoping to take on Apple with, you would a daring person to bet against them.

The Samsung Galaxy S is literally overflowing with tech and has obviously been designed with its biggest rival in mind. It even looks similar to its nemesis! Taking on the giant that is the iPhone 4 is no mean feat and Samsung have decided to armour their champion with a plethora of high end tech.

In its design they have made it light weight at 118g and fitted it out with a massive 4inch screen giving the user a massive area to play with. It is very slightly thicker than the iPhone 4 but doesn’t seem it to hold because the back is cunningly curved. It is plainly obvious that Samsung has taken their success in the past and added others success to the pot, which is not a bad idea.

The Samsung Galaxy S is fitted with a 5MP camera, a fabulous, sensitive and fast touch screen and the usual wifi, Bluetooth and 3G support. It is running an Android OS and features widgets and icons which have been taken from their popular Wave series of handsets, this time on seven home screens instead of ten.

As mentioned the screen is very impressive, and the use of the fast 1GHz processor means that every input is super fast. The phone has very good audio quality, though sometimes calls can be too quiet even on the loudest setting. The Galaxy S also features HD video recording to help you fill the 8GB memory.

Although the phone is very impressive at almost everything it does there are some issues, such as the phone slightly freezing at times and the poor contacts menu which seems strange for such a great, well specified phone. Also, the guy who was buying in all the parts for the phone forgot to order a flash for the camera, which seems like a pretty obvious oversight.

My final thought would be if you are thinking of buying an iPhone 4 take a very considered look at the Galaxy S. For the price of this phone and the deals available, there might be some people moving away from Goliath and opting for David.

The HTC Desire

The HTC Desire is one of the latest generation of smartphones. It was released in spring 2010 and it is powered by the Android operating system.

What sets the Android operating system apart from such operating systems as Symbian is that it was designed from the start with browsing the internet in mind, whist with Symbian browsing was something added to the original operating system. Not surprisingly then, phones using the Android system provide their users with a much better browsing experience and in performance they are the match of the iPhone.

The design of the Desire was based on a previous Android phone Nexus One, a phone that was manufactured by HTC but marketed by Google. With the desire, branding is entirely HTC and the connection with Google is downplayed. As in the Nexus One, the Desire uses the famous Snapdragon microprocessor which employs 1 GHz ARM technology though the display, which is 3.7 inches, is now manufactured by Sony which many claim to be an improvement. It is touch sensitive with pinch zoom functionality and has a resolution of 480 by 800.

Android allows you to create up to seven home screens and all can be viewed simultaneously. The software is also packed with features which includes HTC sense which has applications such as automatic weather and clock adjustment which senses location and time zone; a ringer that is silenced just by turning over the phone; graphic features such as text reflow with automatic size and position optimisation; and a universal search feature which searches everything on your phone and the web.

The built-in camera has a five megapixel sensor with autofocus and flash. Whilst far from being the best phone camera on the market (the 12 megapixel camera found on the Nokia N8 takes some beating) it is adequate for most purposes. It includes such features as face detection and geo-tagging.

Arguably the Android operating system provides the best experience in satellite navigation including Google Maps Navigation and Street View. Download speeds are up to 7.2 Mbps on 3G or 560 Kbps on EDGE.
