Motorola Droid Review

Motorola has recreated themselves with the Motorola Droid. With the new life that this new smartphone has pumped into the company, you can expect more new things right around the corner. For now, take a look at the fact and features on this phone here.

The man who created smartphones, Martin Cooper, has the top knowledge on cell phones and he chooses to use a Motorola Droid. Is it just for marketing purposes ? The Droid has both a nice screen and a nice keyboard, backed up by lots of power and a great operating system. It is definitely the “cream of the crop” as far as smartphones go. Martin Cooper was probably dreaming of this twenty years ago.

The screen is luscious and bright. The resolution is way up there at 480 by 854 pixels. It is a very respectable 3.7 inches in size. It also has one of the highest number of colors you can get in a smartphone at 16.7 million colors. It performs all the “tricks” that a smartphone of this stature should be able to do. Multitouch allows you to pinch and zoom ( with android version 2.1 ), an accelerometer allows you to view the screen at vertical or horizontal angles and a proximity sensor shuts it down automatically when you are not using it. There are no negative surprises with the display.

The inside workings of the Motorola Droid are just as impressive. It has a 600 megahertz processor, 133 megabytes of internal storage and 256 megabytes of RAM. It connects to four different GSM bands and two on HSDPA for voice communication. For data communication there is everything you would need, except infrared, which people hardly use anyway. Wi-Fi is available in the “B” and “G” modes. Bluetooth connections have one protocol, the v2.1, with A2DP. The web browser connects to the web and give a good rendition of web pages. The browser is the WebKit model, which is a high quality browser with a good bit of speed.  (more…)

The Motorola Droid – could it be a comeback phone for Motorola?

When looking back on Motorola’s success (or shall we say, the lack thereof), it is plain to see that they needed to make something happen. Yes, they broke precious ground by giving us the RAZR, but since then, they have very little to show for their work. They have delivered a few thoughtful pieces of technology over the past couple of years, but to be honest, it looked to some like Motorola was taking a back seat to companies that it used to contend quite ferociously with.

But, as you probably did as well, I sat up on the edge of my seat to see the first commercial featuring the Droid. It was just a teaser, but my technological appetite was already craving it. In the commercials, you see a device that goes beyond normal smart phones. And, as you can also see, Motorola has teamed up with some very worthy allies in Verizon and Google. Verizon is one of the most liked phone networks in the world, and Google’s Android platform is breaking new ground every day, making Windows mobile fight for every last breath to stay alive. But, even when compared to the Blackberry and the iPhone, two of the leading smart-phones on the market, the Droid is intriguing enough to turn heads.

But, the big question remains – does the Droid have what it takes to beat out the competition, skyrocketing Motorola back to the top after years in the shadow? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – when three companies of this size and with this kind of talent team up together, you know that something big is about to happen and that is exactly what the Droid is – it is big! It might be a small device, but I guarantee that if you do not already own one, you drool over them every time you see one – is that enough to put Motorola back on top? I guess only time will tell for sure….

Does the New Motorola Droid behave as nicely as it should?

The new Droid phone is definitely a step up for phones that utilize the Google Android system, and it is definitely a phone that has gotten everyone’s attention. But, does the phone really live up to the hype? Well, that is up to you to decide, but here are some quick thoughts on the phone after a general going over.

First of all, the shape and size of the phone are nice – especially considering the fact that the phone includes a full, real QWERTY keyboard. The keyboard is a bit awkward to use at first, but you quickly adapt to it with a bit of practice. The phone is nice to look at, but the real fun begins when you turn it on.

The resolution on the phone is brilliant – needless to say, this one is a looker! You will see on this phone a screen that is definitely above any of it’s Android predecessors and one that definitely competes with others on the market. As far as performance goes, the Droid can seem a bit stuttery at times – though this is easily made up for by the speed and quickness with which other functions are performed. Also, the camera takes decent stills, but what is really amazing about the Droid is the video that it can take! You will be amazed at the high quality of the video that you can capture on this phone! Another great feature on this phone is the audio. Built in, on board audio, from conference calls to music, is very good! It is undistorted, clear, and very pleasant to the ears. Some of this is certainly due to Verizon’s network, but Motorola must have put some serious effort into it as well!

All in all, this phone is a keeper! Two thumbs up for a winner from Motorola!

Motorola Building 350-Person Android Team

Having not been able to capitalize on the success of the original RAZR (has it been 4 years already?), Motorla is obviously in need of some shaking up. With sales declining and fewer and fewer capable models left in the pipeline, it should come to no surprise that Motorola is betting on the Android (after all, they are a member of the Open Handset Alliance). What is a surprise is how big they are betting.

TechCrunch is reporting that they have 50 people already on the Android Team and are planning to expand the Android division to 350 people strong. Obviously, Motorola needs to plan for the future and with Android looking like the next biggest thing, it isn’t surprising that Motorola is hinging their success with Android. Motorola is already heavily involved in the Windows Mobile Game, so making a phone for Android (with no licensing costs) is a no brainer.

After all, Motorola still makes pretty phones..it’s just that shoddy software that has disinterested folks.
